Experience

AOL Inc.

Software Engineer Intern January 2016 - September 2016 (8 Month Internship)

At the end of January 2016, I joined Aol as a Software Engineer Intern and began my 8 month internship with them. I was one of 15 interns from colleges all over Ireland to take part in the program. The placement began with a 3 week hackathon to ease us into the office environment and development processes. The project we worked on was Spacebook, a web application to manage the offices carpark. This was developed in PHP which I had never really used before this so this was a great opportunity to improve my PHP knowledge.

After the 3 weeks, we presented Spacebook to the entire office and launched the application. We were then placed into different development teams in the office. I was part of a team that worked on the One Display advertising platform as a Front-End Engineer. I spent most of my time adding new UI features, writing functional and unit tests and fixing UI bugs, mostly working in AngularJS. I had never used AngularJS prior to my internship so that was a major learning experience for me. I also learnt much more technically, for example: Git, Jenkins, Protractor and Jasmine to name a few.

The biggest learning outcome of my time at Aol would definitely be my exposure to an Agile developing environment. I had no prior experience working in Agile and my team worked using the Scum methodology. Daily scrum meetings, biweekly sprints, etc. enabled me to work so much more efficiently.
